Sonia is a Taiwanese-American composer and classically-trained pianist based in Queens, New York. She started studying classical piano at age 5, later pivoting to composition for the screen and stage during her undergraduate studies at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. In 2023, she moved to New York to pursue a master’s degree in Screen Scoring at New York University, where she studied with Irwin Fisch, Catherine Joy, and Ted Sperling.

Outside of music education, Sonia is the co-founder of SÖNUM Studios, a boutique music studio focusing on composition, production, and recording for visual and interactive media. She has collaborated on many different projects with directors and game designers across a wide range of styles and genres. Notable projects through SÖNUM include work on Devolver Digital’s FPS game Mycopunk, campaigns for clothing brand OUER, and various other short films and advertisements.

Sonia is a passionate and energetic teacher who emphasises a well-rounded musical education, integrating basic to advanced piano technique with lessons in foundational theory and composition. She believes in fostering versatility, curiosity, and creative problem-solving in both her students and her own teaching practice, and she highly individualises lessons and approaches to suit each learner while taking age, experience, and musical exposure into account. Sonia’s goal for every student is to cultivate not just strong musicianship and technique, but also a long-lasting love and a healthy relationship with music.

Outside of her musical work, Sonia enjoys skateboarding along the LIC waterfront and exploring New York’s vast food scene.
